How to Grow Salpiglossis from Seed
Salpiglossis, or Painted Tongue, is a native of South America and related to petunias. The flamboyant Salpiglossis flower is trumpet-shaped and about 2 inches in width, with velvety colour and contrasting veins.
Ideal for the patio in containers, exotic gardens and as cutting flowers, Salpiglossis flowers add an opulent, exotic and majestic touch to your planting schemes and indoor displays.
Sow indoors, January-April, in pots or trays of seed compost, by simply pressing the very fine seeds into the surface, however Salpiglossis seeds need darkness to germinate, so cover the trays with black plastic, cardboard or place the trays in a dark cupboard until the seedlings appear. Keep moist and maintain a temperature of around 65F, germination will normally occur within 4 to 21 days. Transplant the seedlings, when they are large enough to handle and have at least 2 sets of proper leaves, into individual 4 inch pots and grow on at 50-60F. Gradually harden off the young plants before planting out in a sunny position after all danger of frost has passed, usually from early June onwards, spacing 20cm (8”) apart.
Salpiglossis flowers from June to October, regular deadheading will prolong the life of the plant considerably.
